Thomas Wins Battle

When it was pointed out to UW offensive line coach Bob Palcic that Purdue standout senior defensive end Anthony Spencer had a quiet game, Palcic smiled and said, "No matter who Joe (Thomas) plays across from, you don't hear the other guy's name a lot. That's why he's an All-American."

Spencer came into the game leading the Big Ten Conference with 7.5 sacks and leading the nation with 17 tackles for loss. After lining up against Thomas for much of the game, Spencer finished with three tackles and one tackle for minus-2 yards.

Spencer made noise only on plays from the backside where Thomas probably blocked down, leaving Spencer for a blocking back or unblocked altogether.
